In these examples, the auxiliary verb ‘did’ is used because there are the main verbs ‘swim’ and ‘throw’.

In these examples, the past tense ‘to be’ ‘was’ and ‘were’ function as the main verb. ‘The river’ represents ‘It’, and ‘many children’ represents ‘They’
